I'm two decades old.
I'm an Earth Sciences (Geology) Undergraduate at the University of Waterloo, looking into a minor in Biology.
I like film and critiquing film; I especially enjoy fantasy, musicals and dramas. My favourite films include the Nightmare Before Christmas, Moulin Rouge, Citizen Kane, the Lord of the Rings and A Clockwork Orange.
I like music and making music; I especially enjoy electronica, glam rock, industrial rock and classical, while I mostly compose electronica.
I like animals and ecology.
I look at rocks and landscapes.
I enjoy environmental law and environmental assessment.
A little about my music:
I like to combine different genres and add an emotional, political and conceptual face to techno. I call it SOPHTECH. Most of my compositions are based on a standard 4/4 techno rhythm, where I add a liberal dose of saw synths, TS 404 synths, metal guitars, pianos (low register or toy) and string pads. I started off with a minimalstic techno style with some industrial elements, before I moved to a Moulin Rouge inspired direction where I flirted with big beat, drum-n-bass, waltzes and toy pianos. My third stage was a techno-punk style where I focused on rock beats (with a repetitive, techno edge), low octave pianos and metal guitars, with inspiration from prog-rock and metal. I have recently begun to move onto a fourth stage, with a glam rock and new wave inspiration, but keeping the edge of 4/4 techno. Each of these stages are represented in a pentalogy of linked conceptual albums which I have been working on for nearly three years; I have been going back to my first and second albums and updating them, so those with the original copies will be suprised when they hear some songs completely revamped, or in many cases, eliminated. It is taking longer than expected, so I have learned to not set a date when it will be completed. Hopefully by the end of my University career. Since it is taking so long, I have also started some side projects, of which the main one is the "Oxytocin/Hyoscine" double album project. It's nearly completion, and in my opinion, superior to the Pentalogy. Conceptually it deals with dreams & reality, unrequitted & forbidden love, homo- & bisexuality, and foremost, insanity. Musically it begins as an ode to the post-punk movement and synthpop, but as the album progresses it degenerates into splintered IDM and heavily filtered techno rock. By the end of the album songs are composed entirely of broken, chorused, flanged, filtered stuttering beats and atonal synthesized guitars & pianos. "Oxytocin" represents the journey into insanity, "Hyoscine" represents the struggles and thrills of being insane.
